HopkinsLocal is a commitment by Johns Hopkins University and Health System to leverage our role as the largest private anchor institution in Baltimore to create lasting economic opportunities in the city.
Launched in September 2015, HopkinsLocal is our firm and measurable commitment to expand participation of local and minority-owned businesses in construction opportunities; increase the hiring of city residents, with a focus on neighborhoods in need of job opportunities; and enhance economic growth, employment, and investment in Baltimore through purchasing activities. The initiative also supports ongoing efforts to build diversity in Johns Hopkins’ workforce and among our business partners.
During the initiative’s first year, Johns Hopkins hired 304 workers from Baltimore’s distressed neighborhoods and campus-area communities, and committed $55.5 million of construction project spending with minority- and women-owned or disadvantaged businesses. The institution also increased by nearly $5 million the amount of money we spent on goods and services from Baltimore-based services.
With campuses across the city and more employees than any other private employer in Maryland, Johns Hopkins University and Health System can help make Baltimore a place where people are proud to live, work, and study.
